National Energy and Economic Security

Ethanol use provides benefits to the entire nation. Most Americans do not realize the risk our nation faces as a result of our dependence on foreign oil. The Energy Information Administration (EIA) forecasts the nation's oil consumption will grow 44% between 2000 and 2025. Over this same time period, our dependence on imports will grow from 54% to 70%.

Growing U.S. Dependence on Foreign Oil

Growing US Dependence on Foreign Oil

Today, Saudi Arabia alone holds one-fourth of the world's known remaining oil reserves. As the U.S. continues this backward slide into greater energy dependence, our reliance on some of the most hostile and unstable regions in the world will grow, as will the threat to our economy, security and way of life.

Rural Economic Development

In addition to national benefits, ethanol production contributes to economic growth in rural communities across the heartland of our nation. The combination of spending for annual plant operations, ethanol transportation, and capital spending for new plants under construction added more than $41.1 billion to gross output in the U.S. economy in 2006. In that same year, the ethanol industry supported the creation of more than 160,231 jobs in all sectors of the U.S. economy, boosting U.S. household income by $6.7 billion.

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, ethanol production adds 25-50 cents to the value of a bushel of corn, or as much as $5.5 billion over the entire corn crop per year. The increased value of the corn lowers federal farm program costs. According to agricultural economist John Urbanchuk, farm program payments are expected to be reduced by some $6 billion due to the higher value of a bushel of corn.
